van Goghina - A regular van Gogh ;)

Miten vaikeaa voi olla piirtää auringonkukka? Jopa van Gogh osasi sen ihan mainiosti. No, eipä se vaikeaa olekaan, kun sen tekee hieman "huijaten" ;D Tässä siis taas yksi harjoitus gessokurssille. Etsin tätä varten lehdestä auringonkukan kuvan, leikkasin irti ja liimasin art journaliini. Sudin sitten ohuen kerroksen gessoa päälle niin, että kukka vielä sieltä alta näkyi ja sitten vain Derwentin Inktenset kauniiseen käteen ja piirtämään! En tehnyt tästäkään mitään erityistä sivua art journaliini, kunhan on vain harjoitus ja saa jäädä tällaiseksi. Mutta ihan kiva tekniikka tämä on, en oikeasti osaa piirtää vaikka siitä olisi henki kiinni mutta näin sain hieman fiilistellä, miltä tuntuisi, jos osaisi piirtää :)

How difficult can it be to draw a sunflower? I mean, even van Gogh did it. Ha ha, well it's not difficult at all if you cheat a bit! ;D This is another exercise for the gesso course I'm on. I cut a picture of a beautiful sunflower out of a magazine, glued it on my art journal page and applied a thin layer of gesso on top. Then I just picked up a few pencils (Inktense pencils by Derwent) and drew! This was just an exercise for me so I won't be 'completing' my page in any way, I'll leave it as it is. But this is a nice technique, in real life I cannot draw to save my life but this way I got a glimpse of how it would feel if I could - and it felt wonderful! :)

Sain toissapäivänä valmiiksi myös pikaisen ja melko simppelin art journal -sivun gessokurssin opeilla. Levitin tähän gessoa Crafter's Workshopin pilvi-sapluunan avulla, annoin kuivahtaa ja sitten sudin päälle akryylimaaleja. Pilvien kohdalta pyyhin hieman gessoa esiin 'peipivaipsilla' ja lopuksi liimasin stanssatut kirjaimet. Siinäpä se :)

Here's a quick and rather simple art journal page I finished the other day, made it for the gesso course. I used a Crafter's Workshop stencil to apply the gesso with, let it dry and then applied some acrylic paints on top. Then I used a baby wipe to wipe some of the paint off of the clouds to reveal the white gesso. Then I just glued the die cut letters on the page and that's pretty much it :)

Gessoilua - Getting messy with gesso

Tuntuu, että kaikki mahdolliset  nettikurssit ovat heti vuoden alusta, mikä tarkoittaa sitä, että olen taas vaihteeksi kurssilla :) Tällä kertaa Nathalie Kalbachin loistavalla ÜberMedia Gessolla. Kurssi alkoi jo viime viikolla mutta en silloin ehtinyt oikeastaan mitään asian eteen tehdä mutta eilen huhkin sitten senkin edestä ja tässä ensimmäiset tuotokset näytille. Nämä ovat oikeastaan siis tämän viikon oppeja, tekstuurin tekemistä gesson kanssa. En ole näissä miettinyt muuta kuin gesson sutimista sivulle ja tekstuurin tekemistä kaikella mahdollisella käteen sattuvalla ja päälle väriä ja luulenpa, että jätänkin nämä sivut ihan tälleen, en yritä niistä sen kummemmin tehdä art journal -sivuja.

It seems that every possible online course takes place in the beginning of this year - so yes, I'm on a course again! :) This time it's Nathalie Kalbach's wonderful ÜberMedia Gesso. The course (or workshop) started last week but I didn't really have time to do anything then. Yesterday I spent quite a lot of time playing around with gesso and here are the first samples for you to see. These actually handle this week's lesson, making textures with gesso, I'll show last week's things later. I didn't think anything but applying gesso and making my marks with all things possible so don't go looking for composition or anything. I think I'll keep these pages as they are and won't try to turn them into 'proper' art journal pages.

Tähän ensimmäiseen sivuun tein jälkiä hajonneen parkkikiekon palalla, legolla, lego duplolla (älkää kertoko Maailman Suloisimmalle Pienelle Pojalle, että äiti kähvelsi hänen legojaan!! ;) ), kuplamuovilla ja pyykkipojalla. Värit on NeoColor II:a.

This is the first page and I made marks on it with a broken parking disc, a lego, a lego duplo (please don't tell The Cutest Little Boy in the World that his mommy stole his legos!! ;) ), bubble wrap and a broken clothes pin. Colours with NeoColor II.

Toiseen sivuun jätin jälkiä elmukelmulla, keittiösienellä, erinäisten putelien korkeilla ja magic meshillä. Sivun alaosan sininen ja keltainen on Derwentin Inktense-kynillä ja yläosan oranssi ja pinkki akryylimaaleilla.

For this next page I used cling film, a kitchen sponge, a selection of bottle caps and a piece of magic mesh to make some marks. The blue and yellow on the bottom of the page are Derwent's Inktense pencils and the pink and orange on the top of the page are acrylic paints.

Tein tähdellisen CAS-kortin uusilla ihanilla tähtileimoillani ja sain idean laittaa tuon tähden kortin sisälle näkymään kannen aukosta, kun huomasin, että osa näistä Artistic Stamperin tähtileimoista menee yksiin Spellbindersin tähtistanssien kanssa (ja ihan totta, tein kortin tiistaina ja minkälainen kortti olikaan yksi mallikorteista eilisessä CAS-kurssipäivässä? Aukollinen kortti, jossa oli leimakuva kortin sisällä! Ha, kerrankin olen edellä aikaani! ;D ). Taitoin siis korttipohjan akvarellipaperista, stanssasin siihen tähden ja leimasin stanssattuun tähteen tähden (kuullostaa todella järkevältä... ;) ) Distressillä ja ennen leimaamista suihkin päälle perfect pearls -vettä. Kanteen stanssasin pienemmän tähden ja tein siitä kohollaan olevan liimaamalla päällekkäin monta stanssattua tähteä. Näin sen saa koholle korttipohjasta mutta tähden alla ei näy sivusta katsottaessa aukkoa ja tarrapaloja vaan siisti valkoinen reuna - kurssilla opittu kikka tämäkin! Tekstiksi leimasin - tavoistani poiketen... - PTI:n tekstin, kun niitä suomenkielisiä ei nyt ole.... *nurinaa nurinaa* Tuleeko muuten kellekään muulle mieleen tuosta happy happy joy joy:sta yksi parhaista piirrossarjoista ikinä, Ren & Stimpy? Se oli niin hyvä, saisi kyllä tulla uusintana!

I made a little star card for the CAS course with my new lovely star stamps. I got the idea to place the star inside the card when I noticed that some of these star stamps by The Artistic Stamper go together with the Spellbinders star dies (and honestly, I made this card on Tuesday and guess what kind of card was one of the model cards yesterday in the CAS course? A window card with the stamped image placed inside the card! So ha, at least once in my life I am ahead of my times! ;D ). Anyways, I folded the card from aquarelle paper, die cut the star and then stamped a star on the die cut with a Distress Ink and before stamping, I misted the rubber stamp with pearlized water. I placed the star on the inside of the card, added another star on the front which I made 3D by glueing several die cut stars on top of each other. You get the same effect with foam pads but this way, when you look at it from the side, you just see a clean white edge instead of a 'hole' and foam pads. That's one trick I learned on the course! I finished the card with the PTI sentiment - does it remind you of Ren & Stimpy, the cartoon? I LOVED that cartoon, it was the best ever!!

Tässä se eilen lupaamani (uhkaamani..? ;D ) art journal -sivu. Idea tähän lähti jossain blogissa näkemästäni Tolstoin lausahduksesta, joka jäi soimaan päähäni. Siitä muotoutui sitten tällainen...

Ilmava - Airy and light

Pikaisesti taas näytille CAS-kortti. Tein tämänkin luonnoksen pohjalta, tosin jätin tekstileiman pois (se olisi tullut tuohon nauhan yläpuolelle). Tähän yksinkertaisesti maskasin kortin reunat post-it-lapuilla, leimasin Hero Artsin Flourish Backgroundin mustalla, poistin laput ja lisäsin satiininauhan ja napin. Ajattelin ensin, että lisäisin jonkinlaisen reunan/boordin tuon leimatun keskiosan reunoilla rajaamaan sitä, mutta jätin sen sitten kuitenkin noin. Mielestäni tausta on ilmavampi ilman reunaa ja näyttää kivemmalta.

Just a quick post for Sunday to show you another quick CAS card I made. I used a sketch for this although I left out the sentiment (according to the sketch, its place would be just above the ribbon). I masked the edges of this card with post-it notes, then stamped it with Hero Arts Flourish Background, removed the post-its and added the satin ribbon and the button. At first I thought I'd add some sort of frame/boorder to outline the stamped center of the card, but then in the end I left it out. I think the card is lighter and more airy this way and I like it better.

Kolmiota tai sitten ei - Visual triangle and then again not

Toissapäivänä CAS-kurssilla oli Julie Ebersolen videon vuoro ja siinä oli puhetta mm. katseen kulusta kortissa eli ns. 'visual trianglesta' (hurraa fingelska! ;D ). Kortin elementtien pitäisi siis tavallaan johdattaa silmää luontevasti eri osasta toiseen ilman, että mitään osaa pitää erikseen katsoa. Esimerkkikortissa Julie noudatti tuota visual trianglea ja minäpä tein taas korttini mallin mukaan ;) Ja varsin nättihän tästä tuli ;D Lehtileima on Papertrey Inkin ja tekstileima on Stempelkelleriltä.

The other day over at the CAS course it was Julie Ebersole's turn to teach us and she talked about how the eye wanders around a card and how it forms a sort of a visual triangle. She had made her card using the triangle placement and I mimicked her card ;) And, surprise surprise, it turned out quite nice! ;) The leaf stamp I used is by Papertrey Ink and the sentiment says something like 'the requirement for happiness is not good luck but courage'.

Tein myöhemmin sitten vielä toisen kortin, jossa en huomannut soveltaa tuota kolmiota (muisti kuin kanan lento? ;) ). Tulihan tästäkin ihan kiva mutta ehkä se olisi tosiaan tarvinnut jotain lisää ollakseen parempi. Mutta onpahan nyt ainakin CAS! Leimat Papertrey Inkia ja FinnStamperia.

Later on I made another card and forgot all about the visual triangle (yes, my memory is good... LOL!). It turned out an OK card but maybe it lacks something, there should've been perhaps a smaller stamped doily to form the triangle. But at least it is CAS! The doily stamp is by Papertrey Ink and the sentiment says 'thank you'.
